Millennial Anniversaries

Picking out challenging millennial days of remembrance is a pleasant game. The consequences can be quite poetical and haunting. Like rhymes, the significance is somehow in the music of juxtaposition. Let me demo you illustrations of the kind of thing I mean. (We will here let "millennium" to include the Numbers on either side of 1000; so, we will include spreads of 999 and of 1001 years, as those Numbers are picturesque too.)

In 31 B.C. Octavian, soon to be the Emperor Augustus, defeated Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium, uniting the Roman human race and inaugurating the long centuries of the Empire. Just 1999 old age later, in 1969 AD, the crew of Phoebus 11 achieved the first journeying to another world. What a resonance! Two millennia from Empire to a ocean trip to another world.

Others are less dramatic but deserving a passing play thought. Exactly 999 old age passed from Claudius' invasion of Britain, which added that state to the Empire, to the assenting of Prince Edward the Confessor in 1042. Edward's reign (the male monarch was half Norman) was in some grade a preliminary to the Jessye Jessye Norman Conquest. So - one invasion - then 999 old age - then another invasion (of influence anyway).

Exactly 1000 old age passed between the functionary end of the Roman Empire in the Occident (476) to the foundation of the first printing fourth estate in England (by William Caxton, 1476). So - loss of empire, 1000 old age pass, new empire of literacy, of the democracy of English Language letters, the hereafter human race language.

Any Magyar readers? 1001 old age passed between your great licking at the Lechfeld in 955, after which you settled down and stopped becoming plunderers and became a Christian state (I make bold state I am oversimplifying), and 1956 when your great rebellion against Joseph Stalin was crushed.

Don't curtail yourself to great historical occasions; nexus something with your ain personal life. For illustration I can say, as I shlep around, that as far as a united England is concerned I am tramping over a civilization layer 1000 old age thick asset the added thickness of my ain lifetime: this is because, being born in 1954, I came into the human race just 1000 old age after the end of Eric Bloodaxe's separate government in House Of York allowed the House of Wessex to govern more than or less over all England.
